His composing output prior to disability in 2018 includes: a setting of <strong>Psalm 117 <\/strong>for the <em>Royal School of Church Music<\/em> (2017), <strong>The Dreamland Tree<\/strong> premiered in the Scottish Parliament\/Holyrood, <strong>Concertino for Flute and Orchestra<\/strong>&nbsp;(2013) commissioned by the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra,&nbsp;<strong>Columba Canticles&nbsp;<\/strong>(2013) commissioned to mark Derry\u2019s status as UK City of Culture and performed at Stormont Parliament buildings; <strong>Coshquin<\/strong> (2012) in commemoration of the 1990 Coshquin bombing,<strong>&nbsp;Guitar Quintet<\/strong>&nbsp;(2011) commissioned for Carlos Bonell by the Derry City Guitar Festival;&nbsp;<strong>Five Egyptian Canticles<\/strong>&nbsp;(2010) premiered at Michigan State University;&nbsp;<strong>Struwwelpeter<\/strong>&nbsp;commissioned by the Ralph Vaughan Williams Trust as part of the St Andrews Music Festival and&nbsp;<strong>Cautionary Verses<\/strong>. Laurence\u2019s&nbsp;<strong>Concertino for Viola and Orchestra<\/strong>&nbsp;was performed by the Southbank Sinfonia in 2008 and his&nbsp;<strong>Three Summer Pastorals, Concert Variations<\/strong>&nbsp;and<strong>&nbsp;Carpathian Dances<\/strong>&nbsp;were premiered in Covent Garden. Laurence\u2019s&nbsp;<strong>Missa Brevis<\/strong>&nbsp;was performed at St Peter\u2019s Cathedral, Belfast and his&nbsp;<strong>Isabella and the Pot of Basil<\/strong>&nbsp;was featured at the 2006 Buxton Opera Festival. Laurence\u2019s musical&nbsp;<strong>Mates<\/strong>&nbsp;was staged at the Edinburgh Fringe and subsequently transferred to the Landor Theatre, London. His play <strong>Falling in Love Again<\/strong> transferred from the UK to Berlin where it ran for several months. More recently Laurence\u2019s texts were used in the <em>Royal Opera House<\/em>\u2019s 2023 performance: <strong>Least Like the Other<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier compositions have included&nbsp;<strong>The Three Orphans<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>Three Hungarian Peasant Songs<\/strong>, commissioned by the <em>Juice<\/em> and <em>Etone<\/em> vocal ensembles,&nbsp;<strong>Psychocorruptor Infernalis<\/strong>, commissioned by the University of York Wind Orchestra and&nbsp;<strong>Two Stops Short of Barking<\/strong>, commissioned by the <em>SPNM<\/em>. His<strong>&nbsp;Three Postcards From Spain<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>Violin Sonata<\/strong>&nbsp;were premiered by the Paganini Prize-winning violinist Ara Malikian at the Colmar Festival and Carnegie Hall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Laurence has orchestrated several recordings including: The\u00a0<strong>Woman in White Suite<\/strong>\u00a0released on EMI Records with the London Symphony Orchestra,\u00a0<strong>Choral Lloyd Webber<\/strong>\u00a0with the London Philharmonic Orchestra,\u00a0<strong>The Songs That Got Away<\/strong>\u00a0with Sarah Brightman and<strong>\u00a0The Phantom Fantasia<\/strong>\u00a0with the London Symphony Orchestra, which was nominated for a Grammy Award. Laurence\u2019s opera:\u00a0<strong>Ulysses \u2013 a Musical Odyssey<\/strong>\u00a0toured Ireland and was performed in July 2009 on London\u2019s Southbank. The work was awarded a Vivian Ellis Prize for Best New Musical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prior to his disability Laurence was Lecturer in Composition at <em>Ulster University<\/em>, External Examiner for the <em>University of Aberdeen<\/em> and International Jury Chair for <em>Certame Galego de Bandas de M\u00fasica<\/em>.
